The U.S. Census Bureau conducts an annual survey of government employment as authorized by Title 13, United States Code. This survey measures the number of government civilian employees and their gross payrolls for one month. Data are for the month of March. Technical documentation includes information on data collection, data processing, sampling error and nonsampling error.

The Build-a-Table system will allow you to query summary data from the Census of Government Employment from 1997, 2002, and 2007 for state and local governments. All governments across the country were surveyed for the Census years. Please note that individual government data are not available through this system.
